As we’re getting ready and excited for the first day of school (next Monday), we’ve been reading some fun children’s books that talk about school. Here’s a list of fun books for going back to school.

- Ms. Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Joseph Slate
- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.
- The Night Before First Grade by Natasha Wing

- If you Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff

- Clifford’s First Day of School by Norman Bridwell

I was a special ed. teacher and a 2nd grade teacher… so we have lots of back to school books we read. My son is going to K and he loves Countdown to Kindergarten. Here are some more back to school books with ideas to match:

Oh, we loved Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! I’m a big fan of all of Kevin Henkes books, too!
My all-time favourite is Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes:

What fun books about school! Thanks. I never knew they had such things.
For kids that get nervous for school The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn is always good.
Great blog! I enjoy reading your ideas. We just checked out a fantastic school book at the library, We All Go Travelling By by Sheena Roberts. Fantastic for little ones and I can imagine a child entering Kindergarten would love it. It is a song also & our book came with the audio CD.
Books for first day of school- We love We Share Everything by Robert Munsch, and Wimberly Worried by Kevin Henkes plus many more….
We have an entire box of back to school books that I pull out of the closet every year. About 40 total. Love reading all of these with my boys and volunteering to go read during the first days of school at school.
Thanks for all the great suggested books. I too love Kevin Henkes and Robert Munsch. There’s so many good ones for back to school!
Twilight. New Moon. Eclipse. Breaking Dawn.
Oh wait. Those are the books I read AFTER the kids are back in school.

One that I really like to read to my kids is The Night Before Kindergarten by Natasha Wing. It’s so cute, and has the same set up as The Night Before Christmas. I also use this at the end of the year in my pre-k class. They love it! (And by the way, your blog rocks!)
The Kissing Hand. It’s about a raccoon going to school for the first time, and he’s a little hesitant. His mom tells him about a secret, something that will help him get through the “nights” at school. She then kisses his hand and the love goes through his whole body. Whenever he gets sad at school, he can press his hand against his cheek and feel his momma’s love.
As a preschool teacher myself, we read this the first day every year and then make a “kissing hand” to take home (a handprint with a heart in the middle). Today was my own son’s first day of preschool. We read the book last night, and gave each other kissing hands. Whenever we missed each other today, we pressed our hands against our cheeks. Made for an easier day on both parts!
There is always so much information here in your blog, thank you!
