Over here, in Germany, it is a big thing making, filling, and, of course, getting a "Schultüte".
They are often selfmade by the parents (to be honest, by the moms) and you could find a lot of astonishing ones even on internet.
Originally, the were given to schoolstarters to sweeten there first day and time at school, but nowadays, they are not only filled with sweets, but mostly with stuff for school, for crafting or just with little toys or clothing (anything you think would put a smile on your child's face)

The smaller ones were given to sibllings, or to Kindergarten-starters. :-)

Wow!! I just made some of these too. I used to live in Germany and loved seeing all those in the stores at the end of summer. What a wonderful tradition. I am starting it with my kids too, but will probably do it every year and not just their first year. Too fun to only do once.

This is a great way to make the first day special and very personal for children and was the inspiration for my German wife to start KinderCone. I love the thought of making these on your own, and for less craftily-inclined there's KinderCone. She also sells mini-cones and blank cones which are great for siblings or party craft/favors. Whenever we make little cones at the street festivals, the kids just love making them.

I've been thinking about making a couple of these this year. I love that you have gone above and beyond to customize this for your son! Great idea.

Really cute! Last year my boys received Schultüte from their teachers on the first day of school, which I thought was a great idea.
