When I spotted one similar necklace made with beads, it cost $30. Definitely not in my price range for a piece of jewelry my kids are just going to break. I’m sure you all know how that goes, haha! We’ve seen tutorials for gumball necklaces for little girls, but then I thought why not make one for me?! I absolutely love how it turned out and got tons of compliments when I wore it. No one could believe they were gumballs!

DIY Gumball Necklaces Tutorial

Supplies:

  • 6 large gumballs (can be found at the dollar store or party city)
  • 40 in. of ribbon (1/4 -1 in. size)
  • needle and thread
  • scrap fabric
  • doll needle
  • knitting needle

Instructions:

1. Pierce gumball with needle. Then pierce another hole on the opposite side of the gumball. This is basically just making your mark.

2. You will use your knitting needle to push through the hole (only half way or it will crack). Then flip the gumball and push the needle through the other side. Make the hole large enough for the ribbon to fit through.

3. Thread your ribbon through a doll needle and push the needle through the hole in the gumball. Repeat with 5 of your gumballs.

4. Use fray check on the ends of the ribbon to stop the edges from fraying.

DIY Gumball Necklaces Steps

If you’d like to add a flower on your necklace follow these simple steps:

5. Cut (6) 2 in circles. Then you will fold the circles in half.

6. Fold your circle in half again, creating a pie shape.

7. Tie a knot on the end of your strings and thread the needle through the corner of the “pie”. Let’s call it a pumpkin pie. ;)

8. Thread all the circles on the string using step 7. You may need to turn the “pies” to create a full flower.

9. Stitch the bottom of the flower to the ribbon (or you could use hot glue… which, let’s be honest, is sometimes easier, and faster). lol

10. Tie a knot in the ribbon so your last gumball won’t be hidden under the flower.

11. Add another gumball and your done!

If you’d like to make one without the flower, just simply tie a knot in between each gumball. Simple as that!

  1. These are great. I am going to make these and hang them to add dimension to my nieces candy buffet for her birthday party. Thank you for such a wonderful idea!

  2. I love the idea and glad that I saw your posting. I was looking for an easy necklace craft at my daughter’s 8th birthday party. She loves gum so this is perfect. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Very good write up here. This is a good project that kids can help with. Gets them involved and allows you to spend quality time together. You can always poke the holes in the gumballs before hand so that you don’t have to worry about them using a needle. Also try looking at your local party supply store for the gumballs.

  4. I see that you used the large gumballs. I am having trouble finding them. Did you you find a package of multi-color gumballs and pull out the white? Were that at least an inch in diameter? These are so cute and I would love to make them…just having trouble finding gumballs without ordering them online.

    1. Tonya-

Try looking at Toys R us. I have noticed they have them in a bunch of different colors.

They are very cute! I just made one as a photo prop for my 2 yr!

  5. Hate to be a wet blanket as these are undeinably cute but I see the necklace on Sweet Baby Girl as a choking hazard!! When Sweet Baby Girl puts the gum ball in her mouth
(guaranteed she will)she will discover it tastes sweet so she will continue to suck/ chew on it. Since it already has a hole through it, the gumball will split quickly and easily.

    1. Oh yes.. you definitely would never want to use this more than just a photo prop for a baby. Once the kids are older and can chew gum it would be fine… but for babies, they are strictly used as photo props (of course when mom is supervising).

  6. Ohhhhhh ma goodness!!! I am SO in love with these necklaces!! Can’t wait to make them for all the teachers….and the dance coach…maybe the dance team….and ME!!!! LoVe it!!

  7. Vanderbilt Wife: You could probably spray them with spray polyurethane to seal them up if you wanted to! I was wondering the same thing but I bet that’d do the trick! :) You can get it at wal-mart for a couple bucks!

    xoxo, Mallory

    1. Thanks for the comment! I actually didn’t coat them and they did fine (even wearing it all day in the AZ summer). Amazing! If you wanted to make sure this was going to last though, I would lightly brush on mod podge dimensional magic. If your in the craft isles glue section, you should be able to find it. There are a few other brands similar as well. Hope that helps! :)
