I like the air freshener idea as well. I laughed about your "bowing to the electronics gods" as I recently had to take my 18 month old on a 9 hr, 3 flight trip to Alaska and back by myself. A passenger on the plane sitting next to me commented on the studies that discourage kids from watching any tv before age 2. My general policy is not to let him watch tv all the time or even most of the time, but when you're on flights with a toddler, priorities change :). It would have been interesting if I had shut the DVD player off and let the passenger deal with a screaming toddler for 3 hrs straight.

[...] My friend, Marie from Make and Takes, just had a lady guest post on her site about this very topic. She has some fabulous ideas, my favorite being a portable potty! Check her ideas out here: http://www.makeandtakes.com/packing-for-a-trip-with-the-kids [...]

Have you seen the idea of putting bags into an empty baby wipe container to hold them? I do that for my car. I love it and I dont have bags flying around my trunk :)

I travel solo with my kids all the time since moving away from my parents. My husband and I talked about it before our big move and at that time we had only one child (now 2) and since I was taking on the role as Stay at home mom he wanted to make sure our kids knew their grandparents. Last year alone I made the 520 mile trek 1 way 6 times, 5 of them just the kids and I. My upcoming trip will be different though because I do have a potty training child. Thanks for the list!!!

I'm so glad you posted this!! My husband and I are taking 3 kids on a 2 week road trip this summer along the coast (No. Cal up thru Oregon and WA). You gave me some great ideas I hadn't thought of like taking quarters for laundry and packing a cooler of drinks. Thanks for all the helpful info!

We are leaving soon for a 7 week road trip (with some 2 week stops in the meantime) and I cringe at the thought of packing the car for this!

Handy tips!

when i took my niece on a cruise vacation, we bought postcards @ each stop along the way. She wrote on the back... what she learned there, or what she liked about the place. We then punched a hole in the upper corner of each one, and placed it on a keyring. when we got back, she had apersonalized memento of our trip.

(this has nothing to do with packing... but it's a fun thing to do while traveling.)
