Semi-Sweet vs. Milk Chocolate

by Marie on April 2, 2008

What kind of Chocoholic are you? What kind of chocolate do you put in your cookies? Do you like the creamy milk chocolate chips or the almost bitter dark semi-sweet chocolate chips?

I grew up with using only semi-sweet chocolate chips, but when I got older I discovered milk chocolate chips were available too. So I have been in a dilemma as of late. I don’t know which bag to grab as I am mixing my cookie dough. I love milk chocolate, but I grew up on semi-sweet. Which do you prefer in a cookie?

If I’m making them just for myself its dark chocolate all the way, if its for the kids I’ll put milk chocolate in.

For baking, I usually use semisweet chips. For snacking, I go with Ghiradelli Bittersweet Chips, all the way. :0) For my kids, they’ve grown accustomed to dark chocolate, so milk chocolate seems to sweet to them….nevertheless, I’ve created chocoholics! :0) I needed more on my side….my husband is anti-chocolate, believe it or not!

Wow, lots of Dark chocolate fans so far.

Tracie – I have actually put both kinds into the mix before and I liked that too, best of both.

Definately semi-sweet for me!

Definitely semi-sweet! Dark chocolate is my fave.

But, if you can’t decide which to use, you could always use both.

I go for semi-sweet to dark. The fats that they add to milk chocolate are not necessary to enjoy the delicious goodness of chocolate.

Both!! What a silly question…;-) Then you throw in some craisins, and some toasted pecans…or whatever else you have. They’re called Daddy Dump cookies and they’re amazing. Go forth and bake some. Now! Get going! :-)

Me, I like the white chocolate. Not that I actually bake cookies from scratch, but the frozen white chocolate macadamia nut cookies are my favs!

hands down semi-sweet!! Milk chocolate is just way too sweet. Although, now that I think about it, perhaps I should do the milk and then I’d only eat one or two instead of a dozen. Hmmm!

i like to use semi sweet in my cookies. milk chocolate is just too much chocolate for me for some reason. also i dont even like that many chocolate chips in my cookies. haha

I only use semi-sweet in cookies. Semi-sweet has more chocolate flavor, and cookies are already sweet enough for me, milk chocolate makes them too sweet.

Are you kidding me? This world would not be the same without semi-sweet chocolate chips. I eat them plain, by the handful. I just might swing by Costco and buy one of those 12 lbs bags ;)

I must say that I feel so proud that so many people are representing the dark side: Marie take note… I won’t say that I told you so :)

I’m semi-sweet all the way. I feel like it’s a good balance with the sweet cookies…

Semi-sweet are o.k., but I LOVE milk chocolate chips. I don’t like dark chocolate – so bitter!

There’s no question….it’s dark chocolate all the way! The cookies are already sweet from the regular and brown sugar. Dark chocolate chips cuts back on how sweet they taste. I also love them with toasted slivered almonds (spread the nuts on a cookie sheet; bake at 300 degrees for 10-15 minutes) So now you know why Jor loves dark. When he was little, I probably baked cookies five times a week (w/o the nuts)! :0)

I must agree with Grandma Jani. Semi-sweet for very sugary cookies. Use sweet milk chocolate for pancakes, per your suggestion.

In cookies I am a semi-sweet kind of girl, but for eating by the handful, I go with milk chocolate. Mmmmmmm. I too can’t do the dark chololate – not enough sugar!

Dark chocolate is so over rated! It’s like voting for Obama. It’s the hip thing to do, so you’ve got to jump on the bandwagon and do it.

Who cares if it leaves a nasty taste in your mouth? Seriously. I’ve tried the best chocolates the world has to offer and dark just doesn’t get the job done.

If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll become a chocolate centrist and move back towards milk chocolate.

And, by the way, my advise isn’t to buy a bag of chocolate chips at all. Buy a really nice, cheap bar from Trader Joes and just chop it up. The fun of biting into different sizes of chocolate is worth well worth the effort for real chocolate – and you can save on the cost.

Just a thought from a guy who makes cookies at least every other year!

So insightful! I agree completely. Come on people, let’s be honest about it. Saying dark chocolate is better, doesn’t make you seem cooler or more mature, or anything of the sort. It’s not caviar, or real gold flakes on your food, it’s just a more bitter chocolate. But of course, everyone is definitely entitled to eat or say whatever they like.

UGH! I always hated the semi-sweet – I must be a LeBaron rebel (sorry mom and Jor). My vote is milk chocolate – all the way!!!!

OOh, what a great question! I think about this too every time I go to make cookies and I love both of them, so it’s difficult. Some things are better with milk chocolate though, like schotcheroos, so I usually use semi-sweet for cookies to save my milk chocolate ones. They both have such a different taste – I think it’s a mood thing. I think oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are great with semi-sweet and non-oatmeal cookies are better with milk. I do it different every time!

I love how this topic is alive. People really have their chocolate addictions.

I just dipped Strawberries in chocolate and I used the Semi-Sweet. I liked that combo with the sweetness of the strawberries.

Semi-sweet.

I hate those stupid milk chocolate chips. They don’t melt right at all. Semi-sweet are perfect, and you can make anything chocolate covered with them.

Dark and Semi-sweet chocolate are evil, disgusting little wastes of chocolate.

LOL! You’re so funny, I agree with you, it is kind of a waste of what could of been such a delightful treat, to something similiar to eating used bitter coffee grounds or something like that.

Milk chocolate, always. Dark chocolate is nice, but too much of it is never a good idea. Blechh!

I don’t understand those milk chocolate lovers…. dark chocolate now and forevermore. And in cookies, semi-sweet for sure! I didn’t even know they made milk chocolate chips. I had never thought about it before!
