Quilts for Baby
May 20th, 2008 by Marie
This is the latest installment of my quilting bug. My sister just gave birth to the most adorable baby boy. She doesn’t sew much, okay not at all, so my other sister and I put this cute quilt together for her. We each bought different fabrics of brown and blue, then got together to sew one day. For the final quilting, we took it to my local quilt shop and they did the fancy stippling there. I love the browns and blues. It makes me wish I was having a boy!

I’ve wanted to sew at least one quilt a month and have done it so far. My next one will be for my own new baby girl coming next month. But I am in need of some serious HELP. I have quilter’s block. Here is my first daughter’s quilt: pink, white, and mint green.

My girls will be sharing a room, but that doesn’t mean they have to have the same color of quilt. I thought maybe a little yellow would change it up. Or I could even go totally different with wild and crazy fabrics. I would love some ideas on what to do. With two of the same gender now, I don’t know if they should match or not. I am running out of time and need to get started on this soon, before she’s born. HELP! I am in Nesting Panic mode!

My daughter’s is yellow and blue, which has a fun, French country girlie feel. I imagine that would go with pink and green.
Congrats in advance!
pink and brown! or I saw a cute room that is yellow and orange for a girl.
oh Marie… for sure go wild and crazy. Spice it up a bit. I have two girls that share a room and their quilts don’t match at all and it is still fun. good luck deciding.
I love yellow and blue for a girl…perhaps a French look with tiny flower prints. And I also ADORE lavender. I tried to buy clothes and blankets for my little girl in lavender because I felt it was underrated! Maybe lavender and pink? Or lavender, yellow, and mint?
Holy Moly! Your quilts are gorgeous. ♥
All of the above suggestions sound beautiful. Pink and yellow, and yellow and orange sound delightful!
Can’t wait to see what you choose. ☺
I was going to suggest lavender too. Maybe bring in the pink as a secondary color.
Take a trip to the fabric store and see what catches your eye!
Can’t wait to see what you decide!
Love the quilts! Especially the brown and blue. I will have to keep that in mind when I make a boy quilt next.
These are, indeed, just beautiful!
What about just stronger colors of pink and green? Like hot pink and apple green? This what we use for my daughter’s room and they “interface” well with the pale shabby chic stuff as well as the more vibrant pottery barn type decorations.
I love your quilts and would love to see more!
I agree with April. I think stronger pinks & greens would be different enough, but not too striking a difference. I think it would also be a nice touch to reverse the color scheme…using green for your border, and leaning more heavily towards greens in the blocks.
Gorgeous quilts, though!
Hi, I just found your website not too long ago. I absolutely LOVE reading about all the fun things you do. This quilt is gorgeous. Sewing is one thing I tried and just didnt have the patience for. I would love to though. You do have a lot of great ideas that I would love to try with my little guys.
Your quilts are wonderful….makes me want to be a quilter.
I love the pinks and lighter browns. Pinks, yellows and oranges sounds cute and cheery, too.
I was going to suggest just reversing the color scheme—more greens w/ pink for the accent color. But, all the other ideas sound so great as well! Not an easy choice!
Maybe just go to the fabric store and be inspired?
hey, the quilts are so cool. I don’t think the girl’s stuff has to be the same. a light aqua blue and pink would be pretty with the pink and green too.
No need to match! My three girls all have something different. I am loving pink and orange right now - loving the look of this one. .

There’s sooooo many options - just get colors that you like. I just put this one together for one of my girls - aqua, pink, yellow, green - there’s no limit.

Happy quilting! =)
Oooh, I love the blue and brown too! I have been wanting to make a pieced quilt lately - I’ve made some to give to the church for humanitarian aid, but I don’t piece and quilt them, just sew it together and tie it. My mom just made Joel an adorable pieced quilt, and I’m really getting excited to do my own. For your new little girl, maybe purple and yellow? That would look cute with the pink and green - or maybe different shades of pink and green if you want the same colors. There is so much cute fabric out there, it’s hard to choose. I went to the Stitching Barn in Orem last week and just about drooled on all their cute stuff. Good luck deciding!
I love the baby boy quilt! I bought some of that fabric and didn’t know exactly what to do with it… I may just borrow your idea :)
WOW!!! These are so cute… I love them. Lucy’s quilt is darling and you can make one that has purple instead of pink I also like the idea of doing brown and pink. That is a “hot” combination.
Next month already?!?!? Good Luck!
if you could just drop that baby boy quilt off at my house that’d be just great…
You can make a masterpiece out of TP and floss, I’m just sure of it!
Congrats on being listed on Today’s Creative Blog!! Wahooo!
those are great!
Hi! New here- love your site, your ideas, your quilts!
What about pinks and oranges?
It would coordinate with the other one, but not match, and is still very much girl colors…
Have fun!! Let us all know what you decide!!!
I love pink/brown combos, or even pink and black…the toilette style.
I love the brown and blue one you did. My sister is also having a boy so that gives me some good ideas for a decoupage project I’m doing for her.
I would love to make my kids “Kid” quilts too, so I think the wild and crazy fabrics will have to wait for that.
Quilting is so crazy, as there are soooooo many fabric colors and choices to pick and make!
I love the boys quilt, it’s way to cute! Where did you take it to finish it? That’s the hardest part, I never seem to get quilts past that stage. Do they bind the edges?
Anyway I think that light purple and green with a little bit of white would be great. It would coordinate without being to matchy.
Okay, so I’m going to sound clueless… which I am about quilting. When you say “they did the fancy strippling there,” what do you mean. Define “strippling” for me. I became interested in sewing in order to learn how to quilt, but just haven’t had the time or confidence in myself to really go for it. Plus I wish I could find someone around me to do the “fancy strippling” part. Thanks.
Sorry I haven’t posted a comment in forever, but here’s my opinion on baby girl’s quilt. I think you should buy the same floral PBKids fitted sheet you have on Lucy’s toddler bed to put on the crib - that way it ties both their beds together (I did this w/ the boy’s room w/ their crib and toddler bed). I think you definately need to still have some greens and pinks in Anna’s quilt, but you could pull in some of the other colors that are in the fitted sheet and Lucy’s quilt. I’m sure the new quilt will turn out darling - can’t wait to see it!
Also, you and Steph did such a great job on Sue’s quilt - it is DARLING! Can I put in a request if we decide to have another one?
